Fort Wayne has been ranked as the Best Place in USA to retire in 1999 ReliaStar's study and third among 100 of America's largest metropolitan areas in 1996 study, The best cities to earn and save money.
Located in the northeast section of Indiana, Fort Wayne offers an outstanding number of entertainment opportunities. A range of performances can be found by the Fort Wayne Ballet, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, the Foellinger Outdoor Theater and the Fort Wayne Civic Theater. Also located in Fort Wayne is the Cinema Center which is the only place in Northeast Indiana to see independent, foreign, classic and documentary films.
Other points of interest include Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Science Central Science Center, and Fort Wayne's Historic Fort.
Fort Wayne celebrates community heritages with a variety of cultural events. A partial list of festivals happening in Fort Wayne include the Germanfest, Greek Fest, (African American) Indiana Black Expo, (Native American) Gathering of the People, Irish Fest, (Hispanic-American) La Gran Fiesta, and the (Scottish) Indiana Highland Games.
Shopping in Fort Wayne is excellent and includes several malls and specialty shops. The Covington Plaza is a premier spot for fashion boutiques, unique shops, specialty stores and fabulous dining. Georgetown Square shopping center has 60 locally owned stores including a card and gift shop, flower shop, restaurants and a bowling alley. A third convenient shopping area is the Glenbrook Square & Commons which offers four major department stores and more than 175 specialty stores. In addition to the three major shopping areas in Fort Wayne, a variety of specialty stores may also be found throughout the city.
