(The Cocoa Village Playhouse is one of many sites of interest in Cocoa's historic downtown district)
The town of Cocoa is situated along US 1 and is just miles west of Merritt Island. The area's natural beauty and relatively close proximity to Orlando insure there is something for everyone here.
The major attraction for visitors to the area is a section of Cocoa's downtown area known as Cocoa Village. This richly historical and cultural district combines gorgeous tree-lined streets with wonderfully restored buildings from Cocoa's past. In fact, a majority of these buildings, some of which are residences, have been placed on the National Historic Register. Cocoa Village has restored many of them to house modern businesses and shops. The entire family will find something in the eclectic mix of antique shops, elegant dining, galleries featuring exquisite items, and nearby parks. Old brick walkways and splashing fountains will greet you along the way.
Cocoa Village celebrates the area's heritage by retaining the look and feel of earlier times. The Porcher House is a prominent artifact of some of the area's most successful early residents. The Porcher family was the area’s largest citrus growers and was the first to wash, inspect and grade their own citrus crop. Other local pieces of history are to be found in the Teabeau-Field Library, Florida Historical Society and on Cocoa Belle Steamboat ride, where passengers can relive the fun and relaxation of an evening on a turn-of-the-century paddleboat.
The town of Cocoa maintains a river walk that hugs the banks of the Indiana River and several local parks that provide a variety of outdoor recreation. Of course, the Atlantic coast is within an easy drive of Cocoa and is a popular site for visitors and residents alike.
The town of Cocoa is located across the Indian River from Merritt Island. It is the Home of Brevard Community College, extension campus, for University of Central Florida (UCF) and Rollins College. Direct access thru sr 528 beeline to Orlando Regional Airport and 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Cocoa's convenient access to US 1, Highway 520 and the Bee Line Expressway insure that getting around to surrounding areas is very simple. Orlando and Walt Disney World are about 45 minutes to the west.
